Can i sew through yarn with a sewing machine?

I just got a new sewing machine. I crochet hats, and other stuff and I was wondering if I can use my sewing machine to sew through the crocheted yarn. Will the yarn get stuck in my sewing machine, or is it okay to sew through it? I just don't want to break my new sewing machine.
