Conforming to the Hetero-normative?

Why should family orientation govern the whole of our society? Is monogamy an inherit human trait, or is this just a condition of fundamentally religious mandates? How long must gender define our qualities, and why adhere to those archaic attributes? Why do so many couples feel the need to adopt children, and live their lives as a heterouals? Does such actions reinforce prejudices against our right to individual expression? Or is it merely an extension of the hetero-normative life we are not obligated to live?
